As the founder of Upbeat Designs, I recognize that there’s a wide variety of background knowledge that comes into play with my business. My main background in the furniture industry started out with typical home repairs in warranty services. Over time, my background expanded to restorations and refinishing projects for home owners and businesses.
Now as the founder of my own furniture design and fabrication company, Upbeat Designs, there’s a handful of fields and backgrounds that all meld together under the business. Although I have a background in furniture, I immerse myself in other related fields like interior design, architecture, real estate — and even 3D printing — to stay up to date about the changes and trends in the industry of design.
Architecture
I read Architectural Digest to keep my eye out for inspiration. In addition, I love to attend the Architectural Digest show annually because it’s a great opportunity to connect with other professionals in my industry. It’s exciting to be exposed to the great design inspirations of today!
Interior Design
To understand the business and keep up with trends, I read Interior Design Magazine since I work alongside interior designers that specialize in commercial and residential design. The magazine frequently spotlights their top product picks on their homepage, and I pay particular attention to the craftsmanship of the wood products, such as this elaborate wood slatted credenza.
Residential and Commercial Real Estate
Since we fabricate pieces for spaces such as event venues and lobbies, it’s important to be aware of the real estate industry in New York. Paying attention to real estate listings on realtor.com keeps me in the know about today’s market prices and what spaces look like when they’re staged.
3D Printing and Other Technologies
I’m utterly fascinated by today’s innovations of 3D printing. Not only does this change the game for healthcare and machinery, but 3D printing is also making waves in the real estate industry as well! Houses, furniture and construction materials like glass have been recent innovations, and I’m excited to see what else the technology can do.
Regardless of your field, all business leaders should dip their toes into related fields. If you’re in a position like me, maybe you should read some of these outlets as well!
