Fahrenheit 451: Book Redesign

GD314: Publication Design I
Book Redesign: Cover, Pages and Ad

Assignment   Redesign a book of your choosing including a cover, table of contents, and first chapter page. Furthermore, create a pop-under banner (720px x 300px) for your book using the same design choices. Solutions must be all type, and therefore may not include any photography or vector illustrations.

Execution   I chose Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury because, growing up, it was one of my favorite books. I'm an avid reader, and when this book came up in class for an assignment, I read the full book in one day. Knowing that the solution for this assignment would require me to use only type, I wanted the theme of my concept to be the destruction of the medium that is ever-present in the novel. The cover started out as a representation of a page of a book, with the text sources from the book itself. The 'page' was then 'burned' at the edges with the addition of darker values. Finally, to put context to the burning, the title and author's name are plastered to the top layer, covering the expanse of the cover, with the colors of fire as a representation of the intellectual oppression through burning.
The table of contents and first chapter page follow the same concept as the cover with some adjustments. They are not four-color pages, so the headlines use different tints of black. The body text forms tightly around the headline to continue the oppressive tension while keeping readability. Finally, the pop-under banner translates the design of the cover to a new size and formatting.
Body copy is set in Baskerville, 10/15, and headlines are set in a custom-designed font at various sizes.
