New Krypton Comics Rebranding

New Krypton Comics
Company Rebranding
New Krypton Comics is a small comic book shop off Callahan in Knoxville, TN. For this project, we were to choose a business that needed some assistance in creating an updated look for their brand. The owner is a very creative individual and has decorated the store in a very iconic way. So my goal was to create a logo that would coexist with his ideas for the company.
Research
The next step of my project was to research the industry itself and find a way to work the source material into the logo itself. With audiences being fans themselves most obscure references would not be lost but I wanted it to be clear enough that any interested in the comic book store would also get the concept. I looked through many ideas for other comic book shops and imagery from different comics as well.

Sketching Process
I began my sketching by working through ideas from the superman universe, where the name Krypton originates. The first ideas I had were mostly playing off popular imagery from various comics such as the Daily Planet statue, the rocket leaving an exploding Krypton, and the Superman shield logo. As I progressed I began to lean more towards the planetary aspect and working in a popular item; Kryptonite. Kryptonite is well known as Superman's one weakness and most people know what it is. Once I reached this decision I made a few more sketches that would influence my work in Illustrator.
As I found my general layout for the logo my next step was the image in the center. The process of creating something that wasn't overwhelming to look at it and could be clearly seen from a distance took sometime. Originally I sketched each individual crystal of Kryptonite but then moved on the creating a shaded look on the crystal parts and making it simplified.
