A Soap for Cardiff
A second year project which involved designing the concept for a soap opera. I was given a description of a character who owned a shop and another inhabiting the flat above it. Replicating and adapting existing building in the local area I designed three sets; a shop front to be housed on a backlot, a second-hand book shop and a maisonette above it. I based my design on the filming techniques used in soaps such as camera traps and fourth walls.
1:50 Scale Models
Front few meters of bookshop to be housed on a backlot with window dressing and first bookshelf pushed forward.
Bookshop
Bookshop with removable fourth wall and ceiling headers. Camera traps housed within the bookshelves. Sections of flat to be removable to allow for variety of angles in wider shots.
Front of house bookshop  with tables of books and desk closest to removable wall to make filming action easier.
Back room of bookshop with small kitchen area, camera traps covered with picture frames and posters etc. and stairs to upstairs flat. Practical staircase with extended flattage.
Flat above bookshop
Upstairs flat has archways to allow to shots through to other spaces whilst also cheating ceiling pieces. Removable sections of flat between living room and kitchen allows for wider variety of shots.
Kitchen with practical stairs up to bedroom.
Living room with suggestion of furniture and sofa pointed at the fourth wall so the camera can film actors interactions.
