Releigh Records Sprint 1988 project
personal, product design project

This project began when I moved to Glasgow to study architecture at Glasgow School of Art. The cheapest way to move around Glasgow is by bike or walk, hence I bought this old and rusty Releigh Records Sprint, a road bike made in England in 1988.

A lot of parts were already not original so I repaired the bike cheapest way possible and I kept riding it all the way I was in Glasgow.  After I graduated I decided to take the bike with me to Prague because it took a liking to me.

In Prague I started working as an architect and because I didn't like the public transport I wanted to ride my bike, however it was to rusty and it was basically falling apart.. Hence I decided to refurbish the bike completely, new paint, new parts, using high-end light materials like carbon or titanium. It took me 5 months to complete it.

The first issue I had to solve was stacked seat post in the frame, luckily the seat post was made of aluminium and the frame was steely so it was literally welded together after the years. There was no way how to pull it out so I had to use chemical reactions in order to melt the aluminium without damaging the frame.

My intention was to emphasise the craftsmanship steel work of the frame because it was the only original part left, therefore the frame is painted by mate, transparent paint, which look just gorgeous. Originally the bike had 14 speeds but the problem was that the original derailleur was badly damaged and new ones wouldn't fit so single-speed was a solution, moreover for a city bike it's really convenient because it make your maintenance easier. Steel frames are heavy so by using carbon components I kept the weight pretty low, moreover the carbon fork also improved the riding comfort.
