Four Traits of Great Teachers

A tennis professional in the Chicago suburb of Hinsdale, Roger Clarke teaches students of all ages how to play tennis at LaGrange Country Club and Hinsdale Racquet Club. He has been teaching tennis for more than 10 years, and tailors his lessons to match each student’s skill and learning style. Roger Clarke is also studying to become an elementary school teacher at National Louis University.

Below are four traits of great teachers:

1. Respect for their students: In any learning scenario, both teachers and students deserve respect. Great teachers are capable of showing respect for their students’ opinions and ideas. They foster an environment where students feel safe about expressing their thoughts and feelings and also listen well to others.

2. Love teaching: When teachers love what they do, they are much more effective at their job. Having passion also helps them feel enthusiastic about teaching and this enthusiasm often rubs off on their students.

3. Have life experience: Teachers with experience outside of the classroom or outside of education often have an easier time putting their lessons into context. With context, students can better understand why certain lessons are important to their lives.

4. Capable of adapting: Things are constantly changing, whether it’s information or students' learning styles. Either way, great teachers can adapt their lessons and teaching style to match any problem they may experience during the course of the day.
