The Shadow of her Ghost

The Shadow of her Ghost
Installation
Material: School chair, pink paint, tulle, fabric, papier-mâché sphere and the official female school costume in Jordan

As part of a group exhibition entitled “back to school”, participating artist were provided and requested to work with a school desk.
I used the desk to focus on a dangerous social problem in our societies and the struggle of the young Arab female to finish her education.
The major problem here is under age marriage. Sadly, a percentage of schoolgirls are forced yearly to leave school and become a juvenile wife. Stealing their fragile innocence, robbing them from their dreams, and most importantly putting their lives at risk –pregnancy leading to death or other health complications.

Painting the chair pale pink: the color of female purity; which is being abducted by the ghost of marriage-using the wedding dress as a symbol-. While placing a folded school dress under the seat; to symbolize the helpless feeling of missing the past and the age of innocence.
