Poster Series
MICROSEASONS OF JAPAN
Adopted from ancient China, the calendar of Japan was once divided into seventy-two seasons. Each season (候 – kō, in Japanese) was named with short phrases that described changes to the flora and fauna, and lasted roughly five days.
In this project, each microseason is featured on it’s own poster and illustrated in a style inspired by Japanese sumi-e (black ink) paintings. If you'd like to see the next poster, keep an eye on my Instagram or website. A variety of products are also becoming available on my Society6 shop :)
Every three seasons also marks the beginning of a new division, such as "Beginning of Spring", "Summer Solstice", "Autumn Equinox", and these are marked on the posters with unique icons.
Some seasons were also linked by a common idea or animal (the migration of certain birds etc.) and for those seasons I used complementary layouts. Elements were mirrored or rotated around to create unique layouts, whilst still showing a connection between the two seasons.
