Mastering the Primary Curriculum (12 Volume Set)
The set of 12 volumes was done for Bloomsbury's Academic Division, specifically the Education Department. The editors wanted something simple and catchy that would appeal to primary school teachers. I approached the design thinking about the kinds of projects primary school teachers would assign their pupils.
The basic design is that of a wheel with 12 subjects: English, Mathematics, Design and Technology, History, Geography, Arts and Design, Music, Physical Education, Languages, Computing, Religious Education and Science. The wheel turns 30 degrees of arc to bring the icon for the subject into focus. I've picked primary colours (red, blue, and yellow), and decided to keep the icons flat.
Due to budgetary constraints we could not commission special icons for each subject, so I've used three sets purchased from iStock as basis (x, x, x). Most of these were not suitable for each subject, and I've drawn 8 of them from scratch in Illustrator, in close collaboration with the editors of each volume, to make sure the new icons represent the subjects correctly. Still the iStock icons were useful in setting the tone/style for the series.
