This perspective shows the value engineering we needed to do to help bring the project within the client's budget, while balancing the strict land use requirements of the jurisdiction.  The choices in materials help to define the separate massing of the shop area and office area.  The variety of materials, cedar shiplap siding, integral color ground face cmu, integral color split face cmu both single score and solid and zincalume metal panels create visual variety and delight that is not typical in a project of this nature, an auto repair shop.  The design decisions I have made meet the needs of the owner for a functional affordable building and balances the strict requirements of the jurisdiction.

 

My choices in materials are based on my desire to create something that goes beyond the requirements of the landuse code and the owners budget, I based my design decisions on what feels right, something that at times is very subjective, frustrating, intangible and hard to codify.  When a project meets those requirements, and I feel I have synthesized the need to create beauty within the limitations put upon me, then I have succeeded.
