Redesigning Urduja: The Princess Warrior of Pangasinan

Urduja is a legendary warrior princess who is recognized as a heroine in Pangasinan, Philippines. She is the only daughter of Lakanpati, chieftain of the Tawilisi tribe of Central Luzon. Urduja grew up a warrior, able and willing to defend her people from their enemies.

She is beautiful having a golden bronze glow on her morena skin and dark hair, clad in gold and is adept in sword ghting and horseback riding, the leader of the Kinalakihan or the warrior women in their tribe and she is also believed to so speak in multiple dialects, which is a common characteristic of the nobles during the pre-colonial era in the Philippines.

Lakanpati is Urduja’s father and the chieftain-or is commonly called as Datu of the Tawilisi tribe- the highest position which is in charge of governing the villagers, settling disputes, protector from the enemies, battle leader and promoter of well-being. He is also responsible for looking into the needs of his people. With such a task goes absolute power. He is the wisest and bravest among his people.

In the film, Lakanpati is a very loving and caring father that became very ill because of his age and failing health. It gave rise to the urgency of finding a man for Urduja to marry, which will lead the tribe as the new Datu.

Simakwel is the right hand of Lakanpati, the war general and the best warrior of the Tawilisi tribe. He heads a platoon of young warriors who are responsible in protecting the tribe. His position and strength made Lakanpati consider him the most eligible to become Urduja’s husband. Even though Urduja does not like him, he still tries his best to convince her to marry him.

Behind his friendly personality towards Lakanpati lies his true greedy plan, ambitious and scheming ways. Because of his jealousy and fear that Limhang might steal his position from him being the future ruler of the tribe, he plans vicious things against Limhang to destroy his reputation. In the lm, Simakwel ended up teaming with Wang and became a traitor to his own tribe.

Friends are considered as a support group. They give you a shoulder to cry on because they care about you. You love them in ways that are different from loving your family because you choose each other. Just as we laugh, cry, and defend our friends, so must our protagonist and their friends.

Mayumi is Urduja’s jolly, funny and very supportive best friend. She is the sunshine of the tribe; the joker type who always covers for Urduja when she’s away. Mayumi always tells jokes throughout the lm that balances the seriousness of the plot. I think it’s important that the protagonist has a reliable friend, both because Mayumi can be a source of help to the main character and this will convey a message to the audience that it is okay to ask for help in times of need from people who will support you.

In the beginning of the film, Limhang is a wanted chinese pirate in China. Wang wanted to catch him but he successfully escaped using his pirate ship. Having no plan or clue where they will go, Limhang and his men sailed through the ocean until they landed on the Tawilisi shore where Urduja lived. He was injured when Urduja found him and because of her kindness, Limhang stayed in the tribe until he was fully healed.

Several moments of him and Urduja were shown in the lm in order to build their love story. Simakwel became the villain in their relationship because of his jealousy while Mayumi kept supporting both of them. They immediately fell in love and fought Wang together.

Limhang’s arrogant, physically imposing, ruthless nemesis who does not live up to his promises. He is the foreign invader in Urduja’s Tribe who serves as the main antagonist.

In the film, Wang was on a mission to capture Limhang. He started to sail through the ocean but then found himself arriving at Urduja’s tribe where Limhang was staying. Limhang then surrendered voluntarily to Wang in assurance that he will not attack Tawilisi but because of his greediness, Wang still ordered his men to attack the tribe. In the end, Urduja and her people bravely defended the tribe from the forces of Wang.
