Project5 - Final Illustration (Digital Illustraion)

Reflection:
This project is merely to create an illustration based on vocabularies that each student randomly drew from lots.
I was lucky that I got three words of “puncture”, “spiky”, and “cellar”, where first two words match well together. Basically, I had to create an image of the spiky cellar which punctures. Since I had limited idea how cellars and barrels looked like, so I started with some google search. My initial idea was a cellar with spiky projections, which penetrate barrels filled with wine. Nothing more or less. Then, it’s time to build.
composition, I used many layers since the order of overlapping was the key. I began with simple lines and rough drawing on the first layer, then I used the layer as a sample and drew outlines and painted colors. I deliberately used charcoal brush to create a random texture especially on the floor and the wall. Pen tool was easy to illustrate barrels, and the gradient tool was specialized to texture on metal spikes. However, the most used tool was the brush tool with a one-point oval shape to draw the outlines.
I think my plan that using charcoal brush for the random texture was successful. I could remove some of them to make the texture look like a stain on the wall and I found the technique useful for future works. Also, I learned how to use layers to sort the order of each drawing to overlap them, and it matters a lot especially when putting small elements into single layers doesn’t work in most cases.
