A 3-dimensional experiment - to create a system that caters to the understanding and spiritual relevance of preforming Hajj. The rhythm and the flow of information will mimic the movement of pilgrims, relating directly back to the curvilinear motions Tawaf.
Many people are curious in understanding the spiritual significance of Hajj. This is a opporunity to inform an audience about how the ritual is preformed and the beauty that lines in the spirituality and visual documentation after one returns home as a pilgrim. The first concept is a cylindrical freestanding sculpture where a narrative is etched on the surface. The texture of the material will allow for the audience to engage with the sculpture on multiple different levels. Such as the illustrations wil be a depiction of the story - relating back to the panoramic frescos of the 15th century. The type (both in Latin script and Arabic) will create an engagement that is both legible and readable. The texture of the material used will engage the view on a level where they can feel the visual hiearchy (ie. feel the raised relief versus the softer etches), and finally the reading of the sculpture as 360 relief will create a motion where the view is forced to watch around the sculpture in order to read it, making the view preform a ritualistic aspect of Hajj called Tawaf (walking around the Ka’ba).
Integration of Arabic and Latin script - coexisting the ritualistic chant of Tawaf.
Etched test of legability and readablity on MDF - flat surface
Samples of different line weights and shading in order to test the laser cutters ability
Process 1       lasercutting the surface of the cylinderal disk.

The lasercutting process would indicate what parts of the drawings would be shown once edged on the surface of the cylindercal disk. This process would test the legiablity aswell as the reability of images or text, and would be a nice play on the topology of the surface.
Process 2       lasercutting the surface of the cylinderal disk with final image.

Once the image was finalised, it was time to laser cut it.
