For this project I had to create a typeface and experimental type composition based on a director we were given at random. I was given Germaine Dulac, a french surrealist filmmaker from the early 20th century.
I decided to base my piece on her most famous surrealist film 'La Coquille Et Le Clergyman'. This led me to experiment with warping type and I came upon the solution of projecting type onto a collection of boxes placed at different angles. This became my experimental type piece above.
This is my finished typeface, created with the same method of projecting type onto an assortment of boxes. The result is a crooked and warped typeface.
Above is a poster I created to show how the typeface could be used. The poster is aimed to advertise an exhibition put on by the British Film Institute celebrating Dulac's contribution to cinema.
These next images are some examples of other outcomes from my experiments with the layout of the boxes. If I had more time, I would have loved to experiment with and develop some of these further.
