werken magazine, created by the design agency Bureau Mitte is a very personal portrait of the contemporary creative scene. Countering the increasing and ever briefer consumption of individual images, this magazine creates a moment of pause and showcases the complete works of an artist, thereby extending the mere superficial glance.
After the first five editions travelled around the globe, the anniversary edition of the magazine, werken 6, arrives in the home town of the Bureau – Frankfurt, and features local graphic designer and artist Timo Lenzen. His works are surreal image constructs, which are often characterized by architectural influences. Strong contrasts between light and dark, as well as extraordinary colour arrangements are as particular to Lenzen’s work as is the impressive atmosphere he creates with his analog-digital work processes.
At year’s end, werken magazine celebrates its 1.5-year anniversary, which demands a celebration. The sixth edition of Bureau Mitte’s in-house publication therefore features an extra special design concept: The booklet is printed in a generous poster format, folded down to normal page size, and mailed out in a convenient magazine format. Timo Lenzen has created an exclusive image motif for this special edition of werken. The front side of the poster features a series of steps, which lead over plateaus and a multitude of angles to a passage, drawing in the onlooker, who does not quite know what will expect him*her on the other side. The poster has been conceived in such a way that a variety of folds allow for a series of very individual constellation of the image motif. Every variation results in a harmonious image composition, each differing from the other in form and format. The rear side of the poster showcases an overview of Lenzen’s graphic design work, and thus offers an in-depth insight into the artist’s process and his work to date.
