Wood test for Apple and Birch. Top is a diseased apple, other two are birch + apple.
They are olied with linseed oil and sanded with a 2000 grit paper to a dull shine.

The design is for my own use. and the colour helps to differentiate the butter and the pate (any flavored covering) knife. The 90 degree top corner is added to make cleaning out the containers more easily.

The apple is from my garden and birch is from a local swamp.

The white diseased are of the apple is soft and remains pourous even after multiple oiling and sanding sessions. Tough if you handle it carefully, then the surface can be kept intact and will work for a butter-knife. For more robust surfaces I would use the same 2k grit wet sanding process and then harden it with epoxy.

Solid apple varies in colour from branch to branch, but after 2 oil and sanding sessions it takes on a smooth and plastic-like surface and feel.

Birch is a young birch about the thickness of a fist, to get a smooth white colour.  Swamp birches get funguses when the grow larger and that leaves black stripes into the grain.
Like the apple it feels like light plastic after the conditioning.

Testing done, it is time to start making x-mas gifts :)

(sorry, one has been already tested :P )
