Storm Thorgerson: A Pastiche
By drawing inspiration from much of Thorgerson’s work, particularly the covers for Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here and Leisure Cruise’s self-titled album along with Double Digit Love, I have been able to pay tribute to him by way of producing two photographic images, namely Digital Botany and Flaneur. These images are characterized by an introduction of “unreal” elements incorporated by computer-generated imagery (CGI) and a form of symmetry. They share geometric figures, particularly spheres in reference to Wake Up and Smell the Coffee designed for The Cranberries while the composition and colour grading pay homage to Goose’s Synrise album cover. Through experimentation with perspectives and manipulating the interaction of light with the 3D models, I have aimed to create a sense of reality conflicted by the incongruent nature of these elements in relation to the whole picture.
