Versailles Typeface Specimen Book

Theatre de L'Opera is a type specimen book for the Versailles typeface designed by Adrian Frutiger. Versailles was designed after the type found on Charles Garnier's monument outside the Paris Opera Garnier, built in 1861. The intended use for the typeface included opera posters. Because of this, the theme of the type specimen is opera and the text used includes excerpts explaining the art of the opera. Stylistically, the book is designed to resemble a book from the 1800s as a reflection of the time the Opera Garnier was built.
The process of creating this book was extensive, and included individual tea staining of pages, sanding of edges to creating foxing, gentle sanding on page surfaces to create light texture and wear, and mild rough-handling to create the appearance of natural wear and tear. It was bound using the perfect binding method, and covered in 100% cotton fabric. The cover was hand-painted using metallic gold paint and ink. Double layered rice paper was used for the inside cover.
