The Hysterical Society

I have a growing list of products I have been working on for a couple of years now that will finally be available through my Etsy store.
Sweet Woodland Bunny Capri Leggings
These capri leggings feature a woodland bunny, a symbol of what a lot of our society expects women to represent: fertility, gentleness, and docility. But beyond that, rabbits in movies are most often used not as star, but as a prop to tell viewers something about the other characters we're supposed to care more about. How someone treats a rabbit in a movie tells us what kind of person they are. In my design all the cute little bunnies next to poisonous morning glories have their heads popping off. What could that mean? Societal expectations perhaps and what that can do to a person? Or maybe it means you the type of person that would pull the head off a bunny? Take it however you'd like.
Sweet Woodland Doe
Prozac
This design focuses on the antidepressant introduced in 1987 that is still the most widely used antidepressant, Prozac. This drug changed how our society as a whole saw well being. Paired with winding trails of yellow and green capsules are colorful hummingbirds. The hummingbird is a totem animal that represents seeking out the good in life as well as the beauty in each day. The hummingbird is recreated again and again into a pattern so it isn't immediately noticeable. The whole design is overlaid on top of a background suggesting firing synapses and electricity.

Dead Birds (Pink) pattern items from the "Kitty Loves You" Line
Cats are the most amazing, cuddly, adorable, fluffy creatures and I'm definitely wrapped tightly around they're little paws. But let's face it, these snuggle balls are serial killers that bring us gifts in the form of mutilated dead bodies. From far away this design attracts through and appealing repetitive shape. But take a closer look! Definitely dead birds. Lots and lots of dead birds. Just like the ones left on your front step by Max, Lily, Shadow, Jasper, or Peppermint! Gosh, kitty sure does love you!

The Good Death
Our 16 year old flame point Siamese had aggressive pancreatic cancer. It was the last thing in a long list of ailments that finally caught up with this little warrior. To mourn his loss I created this pattern in his honor. The gloriosa lily, aka the flame lily was chosen not only due to it's similarity in name for my flame point Siamese cat. The gloriosa grows along our fence and no matter what each year they burst forth from the ground like a phoenix. But it isn’t just the many near death recoveries we experienced with Sebastian or the similar name that caused me to choose this plant as a pairing. Part of the gloriosa is extremely poisonous and has been used before in suicide. To spare him the suffering, we had to make the difficult decision of putting him to sleep before his cancer got too painful.

It is my hope that this design will stroke a cord in someone who has also known love and loss or someone who has been faced when making a difficult decision in the name of mercy.

Just a Pretty Thing
Looks can be deceiving in more ways than one. How often do stories, history, or even personal experience tell of people, places, or things underestimated for just being a pretty thing? Pretty things are expected to simply sit there and be admired never making a fuss. Be warned of thinking that way. It isn't just the rose that has thorns or the Persian cat that has claws. Hedy Lamarr was more than just a beautiful face good for the silver screen. She had a brilliant mind that helped contribute to the advancement of our society. This design features a turquoise and mustard depiction of a bouquet of beautiful but poisonous flowers: lily of the valley, nightshade, and angel's trumpet (brugmansia) gather together amongst a collection of jutting chef knives springing from the bundles like a jack-in-the-box.
Mushroom Stars
Mushrooms, the fruiting body of a fungus, are incredible! From cleaning up the floor of the woods to acting as a telecommunication system of trees to medicine to poison to just something that taste amazing grilled on a Brioche- coming in so many beautiful colors, sizes, and textures what is not to celebrate about mushrooms? Just dig a little. Mushrooms are more than just props in fairy tales, mushrooms are incredible!
Peacock Skull Mandala
Mandalas are a representation of the cosmos. And spirals are frequently found in nature. Greco-Roman myth says that the Peacock tail represents the eyes of the stars. These peacock skulls are hidden in this mandala design, a reward for those that stop to take a closer look. In Hinduism, the Peacock is associated with Lakshmi who represents patience. Lakshmi incidentally also represents kindness and luck.
Bug Bouquet
At first glance this design looks to be simply a folksy, pretty floral mandala. But to those that take a moment to look they will see there's something more. Accompanying the colorful blooms are a collection of bugs. Perhaps bugs get a bad rap. They can be quiet helpful in gardens and many have beautifully iridescent bodies of their own. Why not pair these two together? They make a natural team!
Starfruit Friend
Starfruit, aka carambola, is a delicious fruit native to the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Mauritius and Seychelles though it grows quiet well here in Orlando. The trees have lovely pink blooms and the fruit comes pretty consistently year round. I use it as a tomato replacement making salsa or fish tacos quiet delicious. At first glance this seamless pattern design of sliced starfruit might look quiet lovely. Until someone spies the tarantula sitting in the center of each slice of starfruit. However, do not fear! Though tarantulas are big and hairy, they are not dangerous to humans and actually suffer many predators themselves from wasps to even humans themselves where eating tarantulas in some cultures is considered a delicacy.
