HAWAIIAN SHIRT: Digital Media
INTRODUCTION:
The  following assignment was to design Hawaiian Shirt using Adobe Illustrator. I was assigned to do the research on the history of the Hawaiian Shirt and its components. Also to design a pattern, buttons and a label. The project also included printed final project at Tabloid Extra (12" x 18") size for display as a part of a final submission.
MATERIALS:
Pigment Ink, Pencil, Coloured Pencil Crayons, White Paper, Sketchbook.
CREATIVE PROCESS:
From the very beginning I wanted to create a tropical layout that would pop - up in bright colours. I did a little bit of research on Hawaiian leaves and other tropical plants as well as flamingos to get some inspiration. I started off with sketching possible compositions. This exercise helped me loosen up and explore different options.

During the pattern making process in Illustrator, I got really inspired and I thought: "This is something  I actually enjoy doing. This might become a thing one day." And so I started to layout different concepts I have had on my mind before.
PRODUCTION METHODS:
Workflow includes Pattern and Body Building Processes

I was very excited to finally use the Adobe Capture application intentionally. First, I made a plan of each leave I would want to include in the pattern, then draw them and captured with a Shape making tool.
For the first try ever, I pretty much used every single element from the Creative Cloud Library and the result is shown below.
PATTERN 1 FEEDBACK GATHERING

I created my first illustrated pattern. Even though I liked it, I was not sure enough to proceed further and use one as a final version. I gathered feedback on what I have done so far from my relatives and friends.

There were different people as well as different point of view. There was distraction everyone agreed on: it seemed overwhelming. As you can see, I approached the task I was given with a slight maximal-ism if not more.

Thus, feedback that my family provided helped me to understand what to focus on when making correction and adjustments on Pattern 2.

For the next try I dramatically reduced the amount of elements on the artboard. The intention to minimize distractions worked very well. It now feels much fresher and simpler.

I also reduced opacity to each leaf, so their colour won't pop up as bright and intense as I flamingo would.
LEAVES WITH THEIR OPACITY REDUCED TO 82% AT APPEARANCE PANEL.
By looking on the seamless pattern on the left, I can tell if one piece of the pattern communicates with another. So it was a good practice to always look at the work as it was a complete one.
BODY BUILDING PROCESS

The engineering part kept me really busy and curious to the layer game I was facing, and had no other option but to defend.

Lower left collar element, for example, was build up with 3 layers: shadow layer, base layer, pattern layer. The shadow layer, which is nothing but  reduced and blurred opacity combined with darker base colour to make artwork pop up as a tree - dimensional shirt. The base colour filled layer is here to display the non transparent feature of the artwork. The pattern layer and its rotation shows the natural feature of the fabric - it sometimes don't align with one another. The following arrangement system has been used towards each element during

Naming layers and arranging them in certain sequence order on the layers panel helped me to stay organized. It also kept the workflow clean and neat.

The body of the Shirt is made of the sequence of layers: shadow layer (where applicable), colour filled layer and a pattern layer on top.
FINAL VIEW OF THE PROJECT  I SENT FOR SUBMISSION AND PRINT.

I was asked to print the final project view at Tabloid Extra (12" x 18") size for display ss a part of a final submission.
CONCLUSION:

I believe I can call the project a culmination that represents all and above tools and techniques in Adobe Illustrator. We went through many assignment and that was a great learning experience. The amount of work stimulated me to plan workflow ahead of time. And I definitely recommend doing so for anyone out there attempting any major assignment. During this project I challenged myself to create something I would be happy with.
