Orpheus lyre
School project in Aalto University
2006
The goal was to learn a craftmanship typed design process in the field of acoustic instruments, and build an instrument of choice. I chose to design and build a lyre due to its mythical history.
The lyre is called Orpheus after the Greek legend. According to the legend Orpheus was able to charm all living creatures and even stones with his beautiful lyreplaying.

The main body of the instrument is CNC-machined birch plywood with mahogany veneer. The soundboard and the handle plates are interchangeable from a stiffer plywood to a more natural sounding spruce version. The instrument is six stringed and was tuned to produce the notes C-D-E-F-G-a.
