Individual Project 1: Top

This is project plays a role as a guide to the machine shop. This is not the first time I worked in a machine shop. During high school, we had an elective course and had access to basic machining, but our operation was imprecise and lacking techniques.
Specifically, I used lathe machines before, but I have never used it to cut incline surface like the bottom of the top. From this project I also learned how to use a milling machine, the eight flat surface around the bottom of the top is made by a milling machine. An interesting technique I learned here is how to rotate precisely on a milling machine. To machine all eight flat surfaces, we have to rotate the top by forty-five degree, because we cannot move x and y-axis at the same time and form a straight line as a CNC machine. There are four holes at the bottom, we can calculate the position of one of the four holes. The professor installed a pin instead of a mill, and he has already calculated the position the holes will be after rotating by 45-degrees. As the hole and the pin aligned the top is precisely rotated. I learned lots of basic skill in a shop.
