The Idiom - Spring 2016

The Idiom

Client: The Idiom is Gordon College's oldest literary and arts journal, committed to promoting a diverse selection of student work ranging from prose, poetry, fine artwork, and photography.

Problem: Though the idiom had been established for years, visual consistency had not been established. Because a new designer comes on board every semester, issues range in appearance quite frequently.

Goal: My goal for The Idiom was to establish visual consistency in layout, keeping each issue beautiful and approachable, making sure the designs could be sustainable for the future.

Staff
    * Head Editor: Alex Morra
    * Assistant Editor: Claire Campbell
    * Layout Editor: Anna Yeo
    * Design Intern: Selina Taylor

Inspiration boards can be found here and here.

Solution: To solve this, we established Creative Direction for this issue, in layout, grid, font, and size dimensions. The files would be passed onto the next designers to ensure consistency of design. Before print, designs would be critiqued by others for quality control.

What was learned: I had so much fun with this project, standing as one of my favorite projects I've done. Design critiques were impressed with the consistency in font and use of grid. It was exciting to push The Idiom to the next step, introducing book dimensions that people had not seen before. I would definitely enjoy publication design like this in the future.
