Experimental natural material lighting solutions

Brassica: natural lighting solution
For this project we were tasked with, through experimentation and research, developing a new material that would align to the cradle-to-cradle approach, all elements must be from a natural source and therefore the product would be biodegradable and environmentally friendly. The final outcome being to design furniture or home-ware product made from this material. While other materials were permitted, our developed material was to make up for more than half of the product’s visual weight. I was excited by this task as the environment is very important to me and I believe that as industrial designers, we rely too heavily on common materials such as plastic, concrete, metal and wood. I approached the project in a broad and experimental ‘blue-sky’ fashion at first and refined both the material and the product form and function through the design process.
