Stop Frame Animation

STOP FRAME ANIMATION
Stop frame animation is a technique that involves animating frame by frame. The designer has to create each individual frame before piecing all the frames together then creating a final image that they would intend on having. Tiresome as the entire process may sound, the technique has alot of other sub genres contained as a part of the bigger animation genre. The main advantage that stop frame animation has is that in case of changes the animator has the capability to make changes without interefering or ruining the final product quite easily and quickly.
The above animation has mixed media techniques applied to it. Both photography and illustrations have been used in its creation. As is presented in the final frame, the animation was meant to highlight the growth spanned in the design field in South Africa. It is for this reason that a number of localized South African brands are shown. South Africa has presented herself in some ways as the cradle of Mankind and the characters from Neanderthal man all the way to modern man are meant to act as not only a sell to this touristic notion but also as a revelation of the evolution of design in the country being a leader in the greater African region.
The above storyboard was helpful in the conceptualisation of how the final video would end up looking. It served as the physical guideline in the imagery and most importantly the timing of the animation. As mentioned earlier each individual frame was built individually which also went hand in hand with the props as shown below.
In order to effectively be able to create the final product, the processes of research, ideation, conceptualisation, building and testing occured and there is an documented guide for all this in the link >> STOP FRAME DOCUMENTATION
