Collaboration with Aleff for group exhibiton GAUL
at Hin Bus Depot Art Centre, George Town, Penang, Malaysia

Gaul is the result of a collaboration project between two Malaysian collectives, Rumah Studio who is based in Penang and Titik Merah who is based in KL. The Malay word gaul generally means “mix” or “mingle”, it is chosen as the title of the group exhibition to reflect how each of us is paired up with a member from another collective to work on this collaboration.

I was away in the UK during that period so being in different time zones meant Aleff and I had to find different ways to create, ruling out the possibility of working together in real life. The outcomes are what
I made digitally out of Aleff’s existing works – collages that change the meanings of the original elements, and successively illustrations Aleff made manually on the digital collages.
