"Getting Started with Ubuntu 10.04" Title Page

Getting Started with Ubuntu 10.04 is a comprehensive beginners guide for the Ubuntu operating system. It's the first result of the Ubuntu Manual Project, a volunteer effort to create and maintain quality documentation with permissive licensing for Ubuntu and its derivatives.

I took on the job of designing the title page and a logo for the project.

To have easy to print PDF files, there are both Letter and DIN A4 formats plus wraparound covers for Lulu. Translations to languages like Hebrew require a right-to-left layout variant.

The title page is meant to give the (potential) reader an idea of what the document is about and should provide motivation to have a closer look. The mouse pointer is a hint in the general computer direction. 5 icons refer to covered topics.

The wave pattern is build from the Ubuntu Circle of Friends logo (which changed geometry with a recently launched new visual identity for Ubuntu, after I designed this ...). It's a unique element  referring to the community aspect of Ubuntu.
English, DIN A4.
English, Letter format.
Hebrew edition with right-to-left layout
Thai edition.
Lulu wraparound cover. Inner frame marks the bleed area.
Layout structure. Pairs of grey bars show the golden ratio. The need to arrange the wave pattern such that it is not cut in unfortunate places led to using its features as anchor points for other elements.

The layout is tweaked for every translation, to make the best of different lengths of text.
