Alternating Figure/Ground

ALTERNATING FIGURE/GROUND

Figure ground is a theory in Gestalt psychology that shows objects well defined on a less distinct background. When using 50% black and the other 50% white on a design it could be harder to determine what the background is. For this project, we were to find a tool/object to trace and find a part of that traced object that could display figure ground. After finding that unit form, we were to make patterns, also still displaying figure ground.
CONCEPT SKETCHES/THUMBNAILS- I chose a wine opener for my object to reconstruct into a pattern. I thought it had a lot of unusual shapes within it that would work well for this project.
UNIT FORM- After tracing several parts of the wine opener, this showed the best example of figure ground.
PATTERN ONE
PATTERN TWO
PATTERN THREE
COLOR- Using an analogous color scheme and deleting the black background, I made my final patterns.
