The Cask of Amontillado (Book Illustration/Visual Dev)
"THE CASK OF AMONTILLADO"
by Edgar Allan Poe
The course criteria was choosing from a list of short stories and going through the process of visually developing the universe:
- storyboards
- character development
- introductory(narrative) scene illustration
    1. value comps
    2. color comps
    3. final
- climax scene illustration
    1. value comps
    2. color comps
    3. final
I chose to tackle the story by creating images that fit my niche of editorial/book cover styled conceptual, rather than realistic, illustration.
STORYBOARDS
Black and white, 4 value storyboards to capture key moments/scenes from the short story.
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
Black silhouettes, followed by roughs of the most unique/prominent figures, followed by tight value characters, followed by the finalized flat characters.
INTRO SCENE VALUE & COLOR COMPS
Black and white, fully detailed, 5 value comps of the best 3 thumbnails out of the 20 done, followed by 3 color comps of the best, well-rounded image.
CLIMAX SCENE VALUE & COLOR COMPS
Black and white, fully detailed, 5 value comps of the best 3 thumbnails out of the 20 done, followed by 3 color comps of the best, well-rounded image.
SCENES FINAL IMAGES
After recreating the illustrations into flat vector shapes in Illustrator, I then rendered them in in a mock old-timey poster airbrush.
THANK YOU!
