SimpliCity is the result of a live project collaboration between Birmingham City University and Hille. The brief required participants to create a conceptual alternative to today’s short-term transit seating. For SimpliCITY the London Underground was chosen as the destination for its design.

SimpliCity is made from a single sheet of polished, pressed steel. It can be incorporated into new and existing Lines and Platforms on the London Underground offering a modern aesthetic that pays homage to Britain’s industrial past.

SimpliCITY has 3 different elements, ALL sprayed with a fire retardant clear lacquer protecting them from rust;
Frame, Seating Panel, Advertising Panel.

Frame - Can be incorporated into any new Lines or Platforms and can also be retrofitted into existing ones with the addition of a simple frame. The frame can be made from unfinished steel as it will be hidden.

Advertising Panel - Simple curved panels can be used as an advertising space, therefore adding value to the product. This can be achieved by either enameling the steel itself or the inclusion of a see-through plastic window.

Seating Panel - The seat is angled downwards slightly allowing users to comfortably perch, yet restricting any litter or liquid to remain on the seat, this also ensures items cannot be hidden and users cannot lie down.

The steel panels for advertising and seating simply bolt on to the frame, allowing them to be easily removed and replaced whether superficial or structural change is needed. Installation and repair requires the use of the existing repair trains that run at night throughout the underground.
