Yuanstool 圓凳子 (2016)
Transforming the traits of ancient Chinese

01. Ideation of Yuanstool
Object: stool design
Material:Polypropylene with fibre glass
Dimension: Ø315 x 330mm
In Chinese characters, "圓-Yuan" is a propitious word which means "circle". And, there is a phrase named "團圓-Tuan Yuan" which means "all family get together again". Thus, This meaningful idea leads and guides my design into final outcome.
"Yuanstool" focuses on the post-modern silhouette, iconic strong color and possibilities in the material of fibre glass. Coated with the strong vermilion color and featured with distinctive angular shape, Yuanstool aims to reveal the representitive features of ancient Chinese building in a modern way. However, we not only focus on the form and shape but also make it useful and functional. It is suitable for outdoor use. Its bulging and angular shape makes it easier to take or to move which is more friendly for all kinds of users especially for elders and children. Futhermore, because of the concave form of itself, every stool can be connected with each other. Hence people can sit much more closer!
02. References
When I was constructing the structure of the stool, the most representitive Chinese buildings in Taiwan, such as The Luce Chapel by I.M. Peiand and Sun Ya-sen Memorial Hall by Dahong Wang, was hanging over my mind. Their works show strong sense of Chinese art and craft in a modern way. All of these buildings inspired me a lot. Thus, I tracked the design thinking and approach of shaping sheet material to catch the earlier version and type of my design and then kept revising details throught the whole process.
03. Design details
I picked up the two images of the Chinese buildings, like huge wall and hyperbolic roof top and tried to use the shaping method to gradually alter these two elements into simple, streamline and elegant features.
