Global Management Consulting Firm Houston, TX 32,000 SF McKinsey & Company is a global management consulting firm for the world’s leading businesses, governments, and institutions. The Rottet Studio team was asked to design a modular, flexible space that would both be functional and in accordance with the company’s office standards. The design was envisioned to allow natural light to permeate the space and always provide the occupants a visual relationship with the city. Transparent glass office fronts and special design elements were used to create a feel of movement and encourage employee interaction. An integral role in the conceptualization of the design aesthetics was to connect the reception and gathering areas through the elevator lobby. This was accomplished by utilizing the same extensively figured wood element throughout the space. The element was vertically accentuated with stainless steel reveals that were aligned with the treads of the central staircase. The voluminous two-story staircase opening enhances the natural light and spaciousness. At the reception area, the wood element was used behind the reception desk, as well as on the main conference room door, providing an inspiring office environment for both their employees and clientele. Establishing common areas for informal and formal gatherings is the central focus of the design. The large open area entering from the elevator lobby is envisioned as a flexible entertaining area that can be readily rearranged between furniture layouts including a cafeteria style table configuration. The space can also be transformed to a training room with the enclosed movable partitions. Visually connected with wood ceilings is the firm’s new break room, located opposite the central staircase and facing a magnificent view of the city skyline. It is intended to be used as a congregation spot for meetings, seminars, celebrations or as a relaxation area for enjoying a cup of coffee or a newspaper. McKinsey & Company is devoted to teamwork and a collaboration of practices. To enhance their dedication, several differently sized team rooms were incorporated at the corners of the building, as well as in-between offices. This positioning, together with the use of glass partitioning between rooms offers better conference room accessibility for all employees, allowing more effective team collaboration. Colorful accents in furniture fabrics and carpet were used throughout the space to contrast the predominant light colors and boost the presence of functional elements. The design also incorporates the firm’s astonishing art collection located at visually perspective points, illuminated with accent lights. Office furniture was selected to best represent the personnel’s ergonomic use of available space in a contemporary style utilizing light wood and back painted glass. Read Less
