Centre for Contemporary Music + Digital Culture

This project is for a final year architecture course, the first semester of which was taken on the exchange program at the Politecnico di Milano (Italy), and then completed in second semester at QUT, Brisbane in 2012.

The project brief was to reconfigure two existing carparks in San Marino, to relocate an existing sports facility and to re-activate the connection with the historical city.

Responding to the brief with the introduction of underground carparking and a new sports club, the proposed masterplan aims to provide a vibrant and dynamic hub featuring a sculpture walk with 5 zones for digital installations, multi-media and interactive art.

The ‘target’ zone to the site’s west is the proposed Centre for Contemporary Music and Digital Culture. This landmark building is designed predominantly to house digital installations and interactive multi-media, as well as performance spaces for contemporary music.

On arrival to the upper levels, visitors are welcomed to the ticket office and cafe with feature digital installations and spectacular northern views. The building is supported on 3 portals, to maximise usable space for the undercroft levels, which can be used for a variety of events and exhibitions.

Much of the program is to be underground, with a series public and more intimate exhibition spaces. The experience of the gallery spaces has been designed to challenge, confuse and dis-orient visitors. Two light shafts penetrate the building to the lower levels, offering natural light and ventilation.

The centre offers a unique sensory experience for locals and visitors alike.
