Life Drawing and Obscuring Identity

LIFE DRAWING EXPERIMENTATION

For this series of life drawings, I wanted to incorporate an element of mixed media, to highlight themes surrounding identity and illusion that I have been exploring recently. As such, I decided to slightly alter each image I had created in the fashion of photomontage, to create some interesting (but not always hugely successful) final images

In this image, I wanted to play with themes of visual pun and illusion to create an image that the viewer can really interact with. I crumpled up a section of magazine paper and inserted into the image to create a surreal combination of 3D and 2D image, which I think worked well in conveying the idea of obscuring identity that I had been aiming for in the original sketches.

Following on from the previous investigation into the theme of ambiguity in identity, I wanted to experiment with a more literal obscurity. As a secondary experiment, I place the same text over the face of the model, in an attempt to leave only just enough of the face revealed, to allow the image to fall into the uncanny valley, and make for a slightly uncomfortable image. Overall, the contrast between the organic form of the face, and the inorganic square of text created a largely successful image, that I wanted to further develop.

While this final experiment was perhaps not as successful as the pervious two in its subtlety, I think it was still a valuable experiment into developing the theme of a more social, more tangible obscurity. I wanted to explore the idea of the partial obscurity that social media presents us with as artists, and as individuals, the ability to edit our images, and our lives. As such, I used a colour check, printed on acetate to allow for some of the underlaying image to bleed through, whilst still leaving the models face blank.

Overall, I think there are some good Ideas presented in this mini project, that are ripe to be developed as resources for my design and fine art portfolios, and therefore was a valuable activity (besides, playing around with mixed media is always fun!)
