The International Open Electives is a two-week multidisciplinary
series of workshops offered at the National Institute of Design
every year. For January 2015, the Open Elective was thematically
branded “Drawing by Design” and accordingly the entire
design language for the event was developed. The essence
of the visual style of the event was— Black, White, Orange,
Horizontal lines, Indian, and textures.
Keeping this visual style in mind, a merchandise kit was
planned which was to be gifted to all the faculties and guests
participating in the workshops that year.
The base material of the kit was charcoal grey canvas cloth.
The straps of the kits were plain chord straps when sourced
and were dyed in orange and black to retain the visual language.
NID tags were also manufactured in orange and white and
stitched to the edge of the kits.
A pocket was additionally designed with Indian block prints
in the colour orange. These block prints were also later scanned
and used as visual cues for other collaterals.
The Final kit consisted of 4 items - one introductory booklet,
a drawing pad, a map of NID and a day planner.
The workshop booklet comprised of an overview of all
24 workshops offered that year. The cover page designed is
screen-printed on Khadi paper. The booklet is a black and
white A4 sized publication.
Going with the colour palette of the event, the black and white
prints were taken on orange sheets for the section separators
for workshops offered in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and
Gandhinagar campuses respectively.
The drawing blocks provided in the kit were also designed
to be A4 sized. The cover of the drawing blocks had been
designed by recycling the announcement posters and
screen printing on them.
The drawing block consists of three different types of paper
also with a hint of orange.
