Theoretical Underpinning
Urban Analysis of Selected Site and District Six.
The proposed project site is wedged in-between Cape’ Town’s dense, flourishing city centre and the desolate, voided District Six which has become an icon for the dispossession and injustices of the apartheid regime.
Policy-driven forced removals and infrastructure destruction were imposed on the district. Presently the district remains an attractive contender for future development due to its locality and proximity to the active city network.
The lack of existing built fabric and urban thresholds, results in the absence of spatial cues which presents a challenge. Another challenge is recognised as the appropriateness and sensitivity required to ensure public and community benefit as a result of this intervention on such a highly controversial site.
