The idea that the roaring twenties was an opulent time for
everyone is a myth. Not not everyone was so well off. In the
1920’s and 30’s, cinema was the ultimate getaway from the
pressures of daily life. Still today, movies dare us to dream and
take us higher and higher into a world where anything is possible.
They stay with us long after we leave the theater. They challenge
us to be bigger, better and bolder.

My lamp, which I named “Joan", after Joan Crawford, reflects this
idea by exploding out of a confined box. Its organic forms escape
and then envelope their concrete containter. The lamp also draws
from the Art Deco art movement that was so heavily used in cinema
of the classical era. I hope my lamp inspires viewers like cinema
inspires people all of the world.
