2017 Kun Shan University 10th Annual International Visual Communication Design Symposium Back to the Origins: Taking a Look at the Development of Chinese Style Design from Past to Present Unlike Western culture that emphasizes scientific experiments and dialectical thinking, the Chinese culture-based East Asian culture boasts a philosophy and ideal in which the inner and the outer are equally valued, and all beings are deemed to exist in a harmonious order. Such spirit can be seen in the literature, art, architecture, design, and more. The beauty of Chinese art has lasted for thousands of years and is still in its prime. Its clever application of different characters, codes, totems, and forms is especially instrumental in enabling the art to last longer and remain more profound than many other cultures around the world. Chinese art pieces are truly invaluable cultural treasures that offer designers an endless supply of creative resources and ideas. Read Less

【 規矩|RULE  】

中國神話相傳,女媧持「 規 」,鍊石補天,斷鼇足立四極,創天地;

In Chinese mythology, Nuwa repaired the pillar of heaven and created mankind with a "compass".
Fuxi created humanity with a "ruler".
Without a compass or ruler, it is impossible to create something circular or square.
The Chinese word for "rule" is a combination of "compass" and "ruler".
Rules dictate how humans act and provide wisdom.

Globalization has increased interaction of people through the integration of ideas and culture.
Standardized systems and rules are put in place to mitigate communication challenges as a result of cultural differences.

Mencius quoted: Nothing can be accomplished without norms or standards.

There are many unknowns when something is first started, including relationships.
Even though the process may be filled with compromises and conflicts,
the establishment of norms is necessary to provide boundaries and expectations.
