From the visionary director Park Chan-Wook (‘Oldboy’ and ‘Stoker’) comes ‘The Handmaiden’, a period thriller inspired by Sarah Waters’ best-selling novel ‘Fingersmith’.
Substance Global worked on this year’s sexiest thriller, in collaboration with Curzon Artificial Eye to produce a suite of intelligent, funny, and erotic social assets to run across Curzon’s social channels.
To support the awards season buzz and introduce the characters, I created a series of treated character graphics. These were created using a combination of photography, typography and illustrated graphics. Curzon were so pleased with these, they asked for these to be printed on a larger scale to be displayed at the Curzon Cinema in Bloomsbury, London.
For release day, Picturehouse, Curzon Cinemas and Curzon Artificial Eye's Instagram channels were taken over with different bespoke 9-grid creatives and a Facebook seamless carousel, each with video animation.
Working within the strict confines of Facebook, themes were picked to create a provocative, standout review video, allowing me to put together a sexually-charged social video that pushed both the boundaries and the critical acclaim that the film received.
This creative campaign for The Handmaiden won the
Screen Awards for Online Campaign of the Year 2017.
