Untitled Black is my interpretation of a modern blackletter typeface.

During my time as a tattoo apprentice, I would come across blackletter type on a regular basis as it is a typeface that has been adopted into tattoo culture.

Including tattoo culture, the inspiration for designing Untitled Black came from other influences such as music and fashion. I felt that because of my past experiences with traditional blackletter, I understood the structure and flow of the type which gave me a better understanding of creating my own blackletter type.

The design choice of removing curves - which is found in traditional blackletter - was down to the fact that when I was tattooing I hated tattooing curves. This gave Untitled Black a more sharp and structured look.

Untitled Black still draws upon ideas and structures that are found in traditional blackletter and the use of angles with thick strong strokes. These together gives the characters weight and strength to stand out amongst other typefaces.

The name Untitled Black is to pay homage to Kris Sowersby’s typefaces Untitled Sans and Untitled Serif, as well as the blackletter genre which it was inspired by.

The publication was created to give an insight to a brief history of traditional blackletter, insight to who I am as a designer/creative and the reasoning behind design choices/process of creating Untitled Black
Untitled Black-Type Specimen was produced as a very limited run of 4 physical copies.

Because of this limited run an online version of the publication was uploaded
