Project 3: Experimental Design

Use music to create an emotional, engaged and stimulated response for design vehicles that will support an artist and album of your choice.
A LP record jacket, vinyl, sleeve, and disk label.

Mind mapping is free association and while I was doing it Weedeater and EYEHATEGOD popped up first and I didn’t want to go further because they are bands that I have loved for a long time and they are from the south. I have a specific and deep rooted appreciation for southern/doom/sludge/stoner metal. Being from the south I figured it was a good path to stick to. I liked the idea of working with an album of Weedeaters because they are from North Carolina like me but the album artwork of theirs which is all created by Arik Roper, and is amazing, is purely illustration. Illustration is my major but EYEHATEGOD is almost entirely photography which I have never worked with and I think it will be fun to try to do something that is completely new to me…i also really like the colors that EYEHATEGOD sticks to with their album artwork.

When creating the design for this project there are a couple things that need to be focused on heavily. These things are the band and their work (obviously and especially with a band as great as EYEHATEGOD, have to do right by Joey Lacaze) which will serve as content, the line work, the color, and how it will interact with the canvas which is the vinyl, its sleeve, and jacket. I have created these mood boards so that I can visually see the direction in which I will be working.
Mark Making was encouraged for this project. Scanning traditional marks like this can create filters and effects and brushes in digital work that is much more unique that what everyone with the same program has access to. In order to make interesting mark I was trying to come up with creative ways to make the marks. I Made about 75 marks with calligraphy pens, leafs, palette knives, crayons, sampled textures. I used inks and paint and stain and more.
The finished product will be photography because I want to challenge myself and do something I have never done before. I have a couple places in mind that I know will go with the aesthetic of EYEHATEGOD and their album artwork.
Fun with fonts!
Fraktur Fonts! no matter where I start I always end up in fraktur again...good thing EYEHATEGOD has used them on their albums. More use of creating brushed but this time from the marks that I created traditionally
