AMA Releases Action Plan to Help Adjust to Changes
As an experienced surgeon, Paul W. McDonough, MD, has served patients out of his Abilene, Texas-based practice for the past 16 years, specializing in procedures that target the lumbar, thoracic, and cervical portions of the spine. Complementing his work at Orthopedic Associates of Abilene, Dr. Paul McDonough is a longtime member of the Texas Medical Association, a division of the American Medical Association.

According to data collected by the American Medical Association, many doctors say their respective practices are simply not ready to implement the sweeping changes recently made to the Medicare payment system. In order to help, the AMA has developed a resource called the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) Action Plan, which is geared toward helping these doctors learn the ins and outs of the new system and get their offices up to speed in order to avoid penalization by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

AMA President David O. Barbe, MD, said that small practices are among the most vulnerable, as they have limited staff and resources to prepare for such a massive change. He touts the MIPS Action Plan as a comprehensive resource that will help them navigate the new models.
