“The Ghat is the levelling ground. This is where the city rubs off your edges and makes you part of this giant flow of energy. All kinds of filthiness come here to be evened out and sent back anew.”- Kiran Rao

The river Yamuna means different things for all, its a home for the dead, a workplace for the dhobis and a tourist spot for the viewers of the Tajmahal. When one goes to visit this well known monument, they can’t miss the huge display of colours on the banks of Yamuna.

Dhobi Ghat is a well known open air laundromat at Yamuna river. The washers, locally known as Dhobis, work in the open to wash the clothes. Huge bundles of tents, shirts, pants and saris are brought to the bank in white clothes, to be washed and dried in the open on iron sand. Dhobis work in a systematic way, they separate the old and the new for differentiating the treatment for the new whites and accordingly put these clothes on the few stands they have made or place them meticulously on the ground. The same is done for all the colours, divided and then kept together according to the shade.

Dhobi ghat is an earning source for many but the sad part is, its going to close soon due to the garbage being brought in the river by gutters. The river has already turned yellow with all the filth it gets from the city and its clothes. These colours always fascinated me whenever I passed from the bridge and I always wanted to shoot them.
