Exploration into Poster Design

These are posters I completed during my graphic design course in Denmark.

This project was the first time I used Illustrator, and besides exploring type, Gestalt principles and information hierarchies, I was able to study the roots of Danish functional minimalism and the life work of Arne Jacobsen (within the A is the shape of Arne Jacobsen's Ant chair, though the current design features 4 legs now because people kept falling over with just three legs!).
Scan of abstract collage based on Arne Jacobsen's Egg Chair, where all design was to be done out of cut magazine text. Actual size is A1 paper.
Poster concept for Till the End of the World, an installment by Béla Tarr at the Eye Film Institute in Amsterdam. Tarr came out of retirement to craft this exhibit to highlight the horrors of the current new immigrant experience in Europe, specifically in his home country of Hungary, which was one of the first to put up physical barriers on its borders.
Right: Here I explored making my own headline font, a sans-serif that was meant to convey a dark, intimidating message. This was coupled with the sign and wall imagery to represent the constant reminders immigrants experience that that they are not necessarily wanted in the place where they are seeking refuge.

Left: Using only serif font, I used type to outline the long, twisted path that many experience in fleeing the dangerous of their home countries. When this poster was printed, I used a black crayon to further grey out the people; it felt strange at the time putting someone's actual lived experience on a poster, but felt the photograph from the Hungarian border would convey the seriousness and true nature of the exhibit.
