Experimental chair
"White stripes"
-experimental chair project-

This chair is the result of a 4 week long university project. Our task was to "rehabilitate"/restore an old chair frame made by the Italian company, Calligaris. We were allowed to make only small modifications on the frame itself but we were given a free hand to design the seat and backrest. I've always wanted to try bent lamination so I took the opportunity and used this technique to build the upper part of the chair. I build my own template for bending the seat and the backrest. I also made a separate bent stripe of wood that connects the pieces of the backrest at the top creating a comfortable curved shape. I sanded the original paint off the steel frame than coated it with matte lacquer to prevent it from corrosion. The raw steel surface and the white stain finish on wood nicely complement each other.
The final phase of the project was to measure all the details of the chair and make a 1:1 technical drawing from three views. That was quite challenging but also very instructive.

16 chairs made by BA3 and MA1 students, plus an authentic Calligaris Sobretto.
