Strike Anywhere Films tapped Territory to create VFX for science fiction thriller Phoenix Forgotten. Working closely with Justin Barber, Territory crafted a series of VFX sequences to support the drama and tension of the final scenes of this gritty alien abduction film.
With a brief to create VFX shots with a ‘found footage’ feel of an old camcorder, the team was also tasked to create atmospheric sequences that added to the suspense of the alien mystery without giving too much away.
Key scenes included shots of the alien ship that provide a sense of the gigantic scale and structure of the UFO, and sequences that show the effect of the alien arrival on the characters and environment. Specific challenges included designing and animating impressive effects that felt seamless with the hand-held camera shots. The team contributed with concepts for the alien craft that informed the design and animation of the reveal sequence, and creating a desert scene showing dead coyotes on the ground and swarms of flies, all in CG using taxidermy dogs shot with a photogrammetry rig, which were then modelled and textured in 3D by Territory’s artists.
