Res cordis
Il verbo ricordare deriva dal verbo latino recordari, formato da cor, cordis, "cuore" con il pref. re-, "un ritorno del cuore". Il cuore era ritenuto dagli Antichi la sede della memoria. Da questa concezione Res cordis, letteralmente "cose del cuore", ha il significato di "ricordi".
The Italian verb ricordare (remember), comes from the Latin verb recordari, formed by cor, cordis, “heart”, with the prefix re-, that indicates a return, a ripetition. The Ancients believed that the heart was the seat of memory. From this conception res cordis, literally “things of the heart”, has the meaning of “memories”.
L’olfatto è per eccellenza il senso dell’evocazione e del ricordo per lo stretto legame che intrattiene con quelle zone del cervello deputate alla memoria e alle emozioni. Gli odori e i ricordi ad essi associati, manifestano l’unicità e la particolarità del reale, la sua essenza e quella dell’Io. A partire dalle peculiarità della memoria olfattiva, ho realizzato un’installazione formata da quattro scatole di legno, che coinvolge il fruitore in una percezione multisensoriale di dettagli intimi legati al vissuto, alle sensazioni e alle emozioni che lo contraddistinguono.
The sense of smell is, par excellence, the sense of evocation and memory for its close connection with those areas of the brain dedicated to memory and emotions.
The smells and memories associated with them, manifest the uniqueness and the particularity of the real, its essence and Ego one.
Starting from the peculiarities of the olfactory memory, I created an interactive installation made up of four wooden boxes, which involves the user in a multisensory perception of intimate details linked to the experience, sensations and emotions that distinguish it.
Res cordis presenta ricordi personali associati a diversi odori, rappresentando luoghi, persone ed eventi particolari, attraverso un linguaggio multisensoriale. La scelta di utilizzare non soltanto gli odori deriva dalla particolare codifica olistica e multisensoriale della memoria olfattiva. Un odore, infatti, viene memorizzato attraverso una percezione globale, che riguarda non solo le sensazioni olfattive, ma tutte le sensazioni del contesto in cui quell’odore viene percepito.
Ogni scatola si riferisce ai ricordi olfattivi di un determinato luogo. Le scatole contengono profumi, oggetti, cubi artigianali di vetro-resina con pellicola fotografica incorporata e qr code di video e suoni.
Res cordis presents personal memories associated with different smells, representing places, people and particular events, through a multisensory language.
The choice to use not only smells derives from the particular holistic and multisensory encoding of the olfactory memory. In fact, an odor is memorized through a global perception, which concerns not only the olfactory sensa- tions, but all the sensations of the context in which that smell is perceived.
Each box refers to the olfactory memories of a place. The boxes contain scents, objects, photos, handcrafted acrylic glass cubes with embedded photographic film and qr code of videos and sounds.
Res cordis #1
Res cordis #1 contiene i ricordi legati agli anni vissuti nella città di Urbino, rappresentando gli odori, i suoni e le immagini di un luogo in particolare, che è per me l’emblema della città e delle esperienze che ho vissuto.
Gli elementi olfattivi presenti nella scatola sono stati prelevati dal luogo stesso, prediligendo la vegetazione tipica di Urbino e ciò che conferisce alla sua atmosfera un carattere unico e particolare.
Res cordis # 1 contains memories related to the years that I spent in the city of Urbino, representing the smells, sounds and images of a place in particular. This place is the emblem of the city and what I have experienced there. The olfactory elements presented in the box have been taken from that same place, favouring the typical vegetation of Urbino and what gives to its atmosphere an unique and particular character.
Res cordis #2
Res cordis #2 ha come luogo di riferimento ancora Urbino, ma questa volta uno spazio più intimo e personale, cioè quello della casa. La scatola contiene elementi che si riferiscono a un particolare momento della giornata, ossia il mattino. Il tema è il risveglio, inteso non soltanto come l’inizio di una nuova giornata, ma anche come la rinascita di un luogo prima abbandonato che riprende vita insieme a una storia d’amore.
Res cordis # 2 has Urbino as its place of reference, but this time a more intimate and personal space: my house. The box contains elements that refer to a particular moment of the day, the morning. The theme is awakening, understood not only as the beginning of a new day, but also as the rebirth of a previously abandoned place that comes back to life togheter with a love story.
Res cordis #3
Res cordis #3 è dedicata allo stretto legame che unisce madre-figlio, in cui l’olfatto riveste un ruolo fondamentale, soprattutto nella fase pre-natale e nei primi anni di vita. L’olfatto diviene il fautore del primo rapporto sociale.
Nella scatola viene presentato il legame che ha unito due madri e due figlie: mia nonna, mia madre e io.
Res cordis # 3 is dedicated to the close mother-son bonding, in which the sense of smell has a fundamental role, especially in the pre-natal phase and in the first years of life. Olfactory create the first social relationship.
In the box is presented the emotional bond between two mothers and two daughters: my grandmother, my mother and me.
Res cordis #4
Res cordis #4 ha come luogo di riferimento la mia terra, il luogo dove sono nata e cresciuta.
Gli elementi rimandano ad affetti familiari attraverso suoni, sapori e odori.
Res cordis # 4 has as its reference place my country, the place where I was born and grew up.
The elements of the box refer to the family affections through sounds, tastes and smells.
