Portsmouth Football Club is a professional English football club from Portsmouth, Hampshire who currently compete in League One, the third tier of English football. Nicknamed 'Pompey', the club were formed in 1898 and are southern England's most successful football club (in terms of cups, honours and titles) outside of London.
Portsmouth FC's famous crest, originally consisting of a white crescent moon and a white star on the background of a blue shield, made its first appearance in the 1913–14 season. The moon and star motif comes from the (then) town's coat of arms and are believed to date back as far as the time of Richard I.
It has been a long term priority of the club to create a new crest as the current crest is copyrighted to the city and not the club. This means the club are unable to trademark the crest, whereas a new crest would be able to be trademarked.
The aim was to create a crest that provides the club with its own identity which is modern, simple, bold and recognisable all whilst retaining key features from previous crests and representing not only the club, but the city and its heritage.
The new crest draws elements from the city's coat of arms, the club's previous crest, the club's traditional colours and Portmouth's rich (and world renowned) naval history.
