Fold - 2014
-----
LEDs continuously replace the old light bulb, but all too often the new technique is pressed into the old technology’s pear-shape. It is about time to construct lamps that are tailored specifically for the needs of LEDs and not reverse. The LED lamp “Fold” is based on the ”invertibility of platonic bodies”, discovered by Paul Schatz in 1929. Fifteen alternating vertical and horizontal hinges are able to twist the lamp in itself and thus produce very different light situations within seconds. The positioning of the 15 hinges is adjusted at one central joint that is connected with a pneumatic spring. Opened wide, the lamp functions as a chandelier, in a flat position it is able to illuminate a conference table, and with a more focused light, it may give the perfect atmosphere for an intimate dinner.
