Katsucon 2010 Badge Art

     have badge, will attend
In a younger, more impressionable age, I helped start up an annual animation convention called Katsucon. Over its lifetime, I have helped staff this all-volunteer event in various roles, but I think my most valuable contribution has been spot art for publications and related materials.

For its 16th year, in addition to other work, I was asked to come up with department-specific background illustrations for convention staff badges. The designs should be "animation style", colorful, and individually distinctive for rapid identification.
Though inspired, I initially worked with the wrong dimensions. That's why we have thumbnails.
I roughed out each illustration in pencil and then inked over a color copy in a single color, cyan. Very traditional! They could have gone straight to color, but it had been a while since I worked with Micron pens, and suffered from nostalgia. Line art was then scanned and digitally colored.
Artists, Security, and Chairman (our captain).
Alumni (those who have worked too long), "line wrangler" (unused), and Medical.
These and the other designs turned out well. As always it's a little thrill to see art become an artifact, for instance hanging on a lanyard, instead of in a frame or on screen. If I learned anything from this project, it's that a scary number of people remember that Bob Ross is holding a varnish brush in his immortal photo.
